Synopsis

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have been identified by numerous studies as a channel for generating nimble and inclusive growth with large scale sustained employment creation. SMEs are also important as they spur innovations and promote entrepreneurship, which constitute the key components of a modern knowledge-based and technology-driven economy.

Despite their growing importance, SMEs face several challenges, including lack of economies of scale, high costs of capital and difficulties in attracting skilled labour and coping with institutional and structural changes. These challenges need to be addressed in a more systematic manner by both policymakers and industry captains in order to sustain the dynamic growth of SMEs.

With the objective to understand Singapore SMEs more comprehensively and rigorously, ACI in collaboration with the former SPRING Singapore (now Enterprise Singapore) has developed the Productivity Tracking and Efficiency Monitoring (PTEM) index which is a quantitative assessment of factors affecting productivity and efficiency of SMEs, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of SMEs for effective policy design to tap on the vast potential of SMEs in Singapore.

The proposed Guest of Honour for the forum is Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Finance, Singapore. Highlights of the forum include “Conversation with Young Singaporean Entrepreneurs: How You Did It?”, Luncheon Talk on “Singapore as an Asia Infrastructure Hub: The Role of Financial Institutions”, Keynote Speech on “Potential Investment Opportunities and Dynamic Economic Development for State of Andhra Pradesh” by Honorable Chief Minister Sri N Chandrababu Naidu from State of Andhra Pradesh, India, and the “Conversation with Singapore Industry Captains”.

Objective

To understand Singapore SMEs more comprehensively and rigorously, ACI in collaboration with the former SPRING Singapore (now Enterprise Singapore) has developed the Productivity Tracking and Efficiency Monitoring (PTEM) index which is a quantitative assessment of factors affecting productivity and efficiency of SMEs, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of SMEs for effective policy design to tap on the vast potential of SMEs in Singapore.
