Synopsis

In Singapore, food waste generation has increased by more than 40% over the last 10 years, reaching 810 million kg in 2017. Only 16% of the food waste generated was recycled while the rest were sent for disposal at the waste-to-energy plants. Increased waste generation results in the need to build more waste management facilities, which is not sustainable in land-scarce Singapore. With better food waste management, businesses can reap cost savings from lower waste disposal costs as well as lower inventory and manpower costs. Improving our food waste management would also increase Singapore's resilience towards price fluctuations given that we import most of our food supply, thereby safeguarding our food security.

Objective

This Singapore Standard specifies the recommended best practices for food processing/manufacturing establishments in developing their food waste management plans. It sets out recommendations and guidelines for proper food waste management of various stages in the food value chain starting from receiving of raw materials, processing, storage, packaging, transportation/distribution, to returned foods. The objective of this Singapore Standard is to help food processing/manufacturing establishments develop food waste management plans with the goal of minimising food waste generated. Due to the overwhelming response for the SS 633 workshop on 11 May, we are organising a 2nd run of the workshop on 31 July 2018. Participants will be given a presentation on this standard and the importance of food waste management and able to try out SIMTech's toolkit via their own laptop.
