Synopsis

Business Mission

Enterprise Singapore is putting together a 7- day mission to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire and Accra, Ghana for Singapore firms to engage with the leaders of the Food Industry in West Africa. This visit to the 2 markets covers the gateway cities to both the Anglophone and Francophone countries of West Africa.

The mission programme will include B2B matchmaking sessions and market visits to/with leading supermarkets chains, local markets, distributors, importers & manufacturers. The Abidjan leg will also include participation in the 5th Agrofood West Africa Tradeshow.

Objective

Background            
Africa’s continent is home to more than 1.1 billion people and will account for one-fifth of the world’s population by 2025. it is made up of 54 very diverse markets – each with different consumption levels, spending habits and standards of living patterns. Given Africa’s enormous market and the potential for rising incomes, the FMCG sector on the continent stands to benefit immensely.

According to “The Rise of the African Consumer”, a report by McKinsey Africa’s Consumer Insights Centre, Africa’s consumer-facing industries are expected to grow by more than $400 million by 2020. Africa’s economic growth accelerated in the years following 2000, making it the world’s second fastest growing region after emerging Asia and equal to the Middle East.

The FMCG sector in Africa has significant scope to expand as food and other necessities dominate consumer budgets, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, the food sub-sector of FMCG has a very large market to cater for. According to the World Bank’s Global Consumption Database, total household expenditure on FMCG goods reached almost US$240bn for a sample of 39 African countries.
