Synopsis
The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF), the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) Singapore together with the Singaporean-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (SGC) and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Singapore will be organising a trade forum on the 21st of May (Tuesday), from 9am to 1pm at SMF Auditorium Level 2.
About the Forum
At this forum, speakers will share their thoughts about current and future trends in global trade and its impact on business. While a trade war is looming and protectionism is on the rise, Singapore, Germany and the EU have pledged for open and free trade. Both industry leaders, government representative and our Guest of Honour Dr Tan Wu Meng, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry for Trade and Industry of Singapore will address these policy developments. They further will explain the importance of Free Trade Agreements, resulting new business opportunities and elaborate on what they will do to safeguard market access and ensure for a predictable operating environment. Captains of Industries from Singapore and Germany will be present to give their valuable insights on these topics
Objective
With a GDP of US$3.5 trillion, Germany is the largest economy in Europe with core strengths in manufacturing and exports, backed by a highly-skilled workforce. Germany is Singapore’s largest EU trading partner, while Singapore is Germany’s largest ASEAN trading partner. More than 1,600 German companies are also based in Singapore and are involved in sectors like electronics and engineering, among others.
Germany is a firm supporter of the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (EUSFTA), the first bilateral agreement between the EU and any ASEAN nation. The ratification of this FTA was an important milestone in 2019 for EU / Germany and Singapore bilateral trade relations and once entry of force, tariffs will be removed and both countries will have greater access to each other's markets. This FTA will bring significant economic benefits to Singapore and Germany as well as the EU.
